AVP New York starts Thursday as 33 men’s and 27 women’s teams complete for four spots each. The winners receive main-draw glory, while the losers become Big Apple tourists. Let’s take a look at the top four seeds: Men: No. 1 Paul Araiza/Alejandro Parra: Araiza/Parra are a tough out. The duo is coming off a career best seventh-place finish in Seattle, where they experienced both good luck (receiving a forfeit from Robbie Page/Todd Rogers) and bad luck (encountering Jake Gibb/Casey Patterson in the contenders bracket). The pair has extensive chemistry together, having played 2015 and 2016 exclusively together. They should make the main draw and have proven that they can get hot and do damage once there. No. 2 Maddison/Riley McKibbin: Maddison gets up big at the net and is a force with the southpaw swing. Riley, a former USC setter, puts all of his skills to work in the backcourt. The pair has a ninth and 13th place so far this year. This team has all the pieces, and will likely not only get into the main draw, but will force a number of third sets. If they either get some breaks or make some of their own breaks they have the potential to do well. No. 3 Adam Cabbage/Jake Rosener: Cabbage is a gritty chaser with a tough serve.
