U.S. Olympians April Ross/Kerri Walsh Jennings, Casey Patterson/Jake Gibb earned championships this weekend at AVP San Francisco. Both teams went undefeated. Women: In the final, top-seeded Ross/Walsh Jennings, who lost a set to USC upstarts Kelly Claes/Sara Hughes on Saturday, let the kids know who rules with a solid 21-17, 21-13 final victory. Ross/Walsh Jennings have 12 titles in their last 13 tournaments. In the first semifinal, Ross/Walsh Jennings eliminated No. 5 Emily Day/Brittany Hochevar 21-13, 21-18. In the second semifinal, No. 13 Claes/Hughes advanced over No. 2 Lane Carico/Summer Ross 21-15, 23-21. Claes/Hughes knocked off top No. 2,4, and 5 seeds this weekend (Carico/Ross, Jen Fopma/Jen Kessy, and Emily Day/Brittany Hochevar), respectively. Claes and Hughes, the NCAA Beach champions, are a team of the future, and it appears that the future is now. Men: In the final, Gibb/Patterson needed three sets to win the championship over the Crabb brothers, 18-21, 21-15, 15-10, their 12th title in 25 tries. The men’s draw featured three set semifinals and finals. Olympians and No. 1 seeded Patterson/Gibb outlasted No. 5 John Mayer/Stafford Slick 16-21, 21-17, 15-13. In the second semifinal, No. 2 Trevor/Taylor Crabb ended the run of No. 13 Ty Loomis/Marty Lorenz 21-16, 24-26, 15-12.
