There are two beach events going on this weekend, an FIVB event in Poland and the AVP New York. First, a quick update on Olsztyn, Poland, where Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Sweat finished fifth Friday. On the men’s side, Tri Bourne/John Hyden and Jake Gibb/Casey Patterson are sitting in ninth place awaiting opponents. In New York, there were a number of upsets on both sides Friday. No. 4 seed Casey Jennings/Robbie Page were upset by both No. 13 Paul Araiza/Alejandro Parra (23-25, 17-21) and No. 12 Pedro Brazao/Gregg Weaver (12-21, 17-21). No. 11 Derek Olson/Ed Ratledge lost to No. 14 Maddison/Riley McKibbin (15-21,13-21). Precocious upstarts No. 14 Kelly Claes/Sara Hughes sent both No. 3 Angela Bensend/Geena Urango (21-14, 21-19) and No. 6 Betsi Flint/Kelley Larsen (21-18, 18-21, 15-7) to the contenders bracket. Hughes said, "We are having so much fun in New York! Kelly and I are playing well together and are excited to keep it rolling." No. 13 Dana Fiume pulled off a big upset over No. 4 Emily Day/Jen Kessy (21-15,13-21, 15-13). No. 10 Janelle Allen/Megan Wallin-Brockway surprised No. 7 Amanda Dowdy/Emily Stockman (21-18, 23-21). No. 16 Jace Pardon/Brittany Tiegs sent Ali McColloch/Kelly Reeves home in the contenders bracket (21-19, 19-21, 15-10). Naturally, the top Olympic contenders, No. 1 April Ross/Keri Walsh-Jennings and No. 2 Phil Dalhausser/Nick Lucena, cruised through their matches in straight sets.
