Big West Conference Makes Men’s Volleyball 18th Sponsored Sport - Articles

The Big West Conference today announced the creation of a men’s volleyball championship beginning in 2018, becoming the first NCAA Division I conference to sponsor competition in the sport. Big West video is here: In making the announcement, Big West Commissioner Dennis Farrell noted that men’s volleyball will become the18th sport in which the conference conducts an annual championship. The Big West Board of Directors approved a six-team league consisting of full conference members CSUN, Long Beach State, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, and Hawai'i. A sixth team from UC San Diego will join the group as an associate member and will give the conference the minimum six teams required for postseason NCAA automatic qualification. An associate member in the Big West is any institution that participates in three or less conference championships. Other current Big West associate members are CSU Bakersfield in women’s beach volleyball and Sacramento State in men’s soccer and women’s beach volleyball. Competition for the regular season championship will be contested in a double round-robin format for a total of 10 matches. A six-team, single elimination postseason tournament will be conducted at a campus site one week prior to the NCAA Championship Selections. “The Big West Conference is thrilled to add a sport that is so popular in our region and is growing on the national level,” said Farrell. “Because the NCAA championship is conducted across Divisions I and II, UC San Diego despite its Division II status in its other sports, is eligible to compete in the Big West in this...

Gold for Walsh/Ross in Moscow, Fourth for Gibb/Patterson but clinch Olympic berth - Articles

The Moscow Grand Slam is in the books; let's re-examine the Olympic qualifying ramifications for the Americans. Two U.S. teams, April Ross/Kerri Walsh Jennings take home gold, defeating No. 2 Larissa Franca and Talita Antunes of Brazil, 22-20, 21-17. No. 5 Nummerdor/Varenhorst of the Netherlands upset No. 1 Alison Cerutti/Bruno Oscar Schmidt of Brazil for gold 21-19, 7-21, 17-15. Nummerdor/Varenhorst scored ten less points than Cerutti/Schmidt, but they won the right points. Jake Gibb/Casey Patterson finished in fourth, dropping a close match to No. 17 Bartosz Losiak/Piotr Kantor of Poland 19-21, 22-20, 15-12. Their fourth place finish puts the team of Tri Bourne/John Hyden out of Rio contention. The top American men's team, No. 3 Phil Dalhausser/Nick Lucena, lost a squeaker to No. 13 Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo of Italy 22-20, 23-21 in the first round of playoffs. Some will recall that this Italian team spoiled the American's 2012 Olympics in London, upsetting them in the round of 16. Nicolai/Lupo apparently are Dalhausser/Lucena's kryptonite. Even so, Dalhausser/Lucena have officially qualified for the Olympics by completing their 12th event, although they will only earn 120 points/person for their 17th place finish. The 240 points will take them to 5,720 points. Dalhausser/Lucena are currently ranked fourth in the Olympic rankings. After Moscow, Dalhausser/Lucena drop to fifth, as Nummerdor/Varenhorst, made a significant leap with their gold finish, adding 560 points for a new total of 5,840, reaching fourth place. Brouwer/Meeuwsen finished in 5th place, and will increase their points total by 180, for Olympic ranking scores of 6,160...

Olympic qualifying update: Moscow Grand Slam - Articles

The Moscow Grand Slam is well into elimination playoffs; let's reexamine the Olympic qualifying ramifications for the Americans. The top American men's team, No. 3 Phil Dalhausser/Nick Lucena, lost a squeaker to No. 13 Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo of Italy 22-20, 23-21. Pool play has been completed in the Moscow Grand Slam, the next-to-last Olympic qualification tournament, so let's see how this affects the race for the second U.S. Olympic spot. On the women's side, Kerri Walsh Jennings/April Ross have cozily qualified with their 12 finishes and 5,790 points, currently ranked No. 4. In their sights is the No. 3 team of Laura Ludwig/Kira Walkenhorst at 6,000 points. Walsh/Ross' lowest finishes are 80 (once) and 120 (twice). If Walsh/Ross finish fifth or better they will overtake Ludwig/Walkenhorst this week. If Walsh/Ross win both Moscow and Hamburg they could actually finish first in Olympic rankings if neither Brazilian team advances their score by more than 50 points (Larissa Franca/Talita Antunes) or 120 points (Agatha Bednarczuk/Barbara Seixas). Due to the FIVB seeding system, however, they would only be seeded second to the host country by FIVB rule. Walsh/Ross completed their pool play in Moscow with a 3-0 record, dropping two sets. Their point ratio of 1.141 was qualified them for a bye in the first round of playoffs. No. 3 Walsh/Ross defeated No. 30 Nadezda Makroguzova/Olga Motrich of Russia 19-21, 21-14, 15-10, No. 19 Eduarda Lisboa/Eliza Maia of Brazil 18-21, 21-17, 16-14, and No. 14 Isabelle Forrer/Anouk Verge-Depre of Switzerland 31-29, 21-16. Walsh/Ross will face either No. 22 Emily Day/Jennifer Kessy of the USA or No. 29 Yulia Abalakina/Ekaterina Syrtseva of Russia in the second round of playoffs. Emily Day/Jennifer Kessy finished pool with a 1-2 match record, 3-4 in sets. Their point ratio was exactly 1.000 (won and lost...

Youth movement? - Articles

Kerri Walsh is 37, April Ross is 33, Phil Dalhausser is 36, and Nick Lucena is 36. Where is the next generation of USA stars coming from? Based on the results of the NorCECA qualifier at Manhattan Beach on Wednesday, maybe we have an answer. Young teams figured prominently in the results. At stake: the opportunity to represent the USA in three NorCECA (NORth America, CEntral America, and CAribbean) events in Cuba, Canada, and Puerto Rico. In fact, of the four top seeds on the men's and women's brackets, only one team won their first match of the day (they received first-round byes). USC college stars Sara Hughes/Kelly Claes had the audacity to dismiss their elders and qualify in first place at the tender ages of 21 and 20, respectively. Also in the finals: 24 year old UCLA alumnus Kelly Reeves, partnering with Ali McColloch. Hughes/Claes won in straight sets, 21-12, 21-19. "We felt really good about our play,” Hughes said. “This is our first transition tournament from the collegiate ranks; this tournament is definitely a level above that. It's fun to come out here and get more experience." Added Claes, ”The transition from college to AVP/FIVB is really exciting. We're excited to be out here; the players are bigger, stronger, and more physical. We're ready to compete with them. " In the men’s finals, Miles Evans (26 years old) and Spencer McLachlin (27) were forced to forfeit the final match to Marty Lorenz and Adam Roberts so McLachlin could make his flight to get to...

Rio Olympics Women's Indoor pools announced - Articles

No one said it would be easy and it won’t be as Team USA learned it will be in a first-round Olympics pool in Rio with China, Serbia, Italy, the Netherlands and Puerto Rico. The other pool includes Brazil, Russia, Japan, Korea, Argentina and Cameroon. The Olympics are August 6-21. The 12 qualifiers are divided into two pools of six teams. The top four teams in each pool will advance to the elimination rounds. Brazil is automatically seeded first in Pool A as the host country. The listing of the pools and the resumes of the teams follow. “We have some things that we need to improve; every program identifies some things that we have to get better at,” USA women’s coach Karch Kiraly told Volleyball earlier this month. “Serving and passing are big issues for us; they are always big focal points.” His team is in action Friday with another Red-Blue intrasquad scrimmage at Santiago College. Then the women play in the FIVB World Grand Prix in Ningbo, China, against Germany on June 10, against Thailand on June 11 and China June 12. “We are a team that plays fast. That plays like a second family. That has fun while competing ferociously and has a lot of fortitude and grit when it comes to adverse situations, obstacles, and challenges, which we know will arise in volleyball, as they do in life,” Kiraly said. The Grand Prix moves to Long Beach, Calif., where the U.S. plays Germany on June 17 before the June 18 matchup with Japan...

Mark Burik's take on AVP/FIVB Cincinnati - Articles

The tournament was a huge point-grabbing opportunity for a slew of American teams. It also turned out to be a good chance for the international guys and gals who were willing to make the trip. This is obvious to us as players but spectators on the outside looking in are still left befuddled when all of these “World Tour” events don’t consistently field the top teams. Let me break it down for you. Every team has to make decisions about which tournaments they want to attend and several factors weigh in: 1. Travel Money — How much is it going to cost us to go to this tournament? 2. Travel Energy — How long is the trip? How early am I able to get there? What competitions immediately follow this one? 3. Travel Time — Can I play a tournament before this one and still get there on time? What about the backside? Are 35 hours in airports, planes and taxis really worth it this time? 4. Partners — Who can/will play with me? Is my guy/gal healthy? 5. Projected Competitiveness of the Tournament — What are my chances of getting a good finish with the teams that will be there? Things to note: European tournaments are always LOADED. The travel is very easy for so many countries, so the time/financial risk is much lower. America and Brazil are much more costly to get to, so many teams elect not to make the trip. However, that is sometimes outweighed by that fact that the host country...

Familiar Faces are crowned at NVL Port St. Lucie - Articles

As play concluded Sunday at the NVL season opener at Club Med Sandpiper Bay, Port St. Lucie, Fla., familiar faces were crowned champions. For the men, experience ruled. Veterans and No. 10 seeds Mike DiPierro/Steven Grotowski managed to take down a young, high-flying, hard-hitting No. 12 seed Martin Caban/Petr Doubravsky in a 21-19, 21-23, 15-12 final. Grotowski is a 2012 beach volleyball Olympic veteran; DiPierro has been playing on the tour since 2000. On paper, it looked as if Caban/Doubravsky would dominate. The pair of 6-foot-4, 24-year-olds possessed far more athleticism than DiPierro/Grotowski. One spectator quipped that it was a battle between the “six-pack abs” and “dad bods”. But DiPierro hits with both hands and Grotowski sliced and diced, frustrating the block. Caban/Doubravsky played “big boy” volleyball, soaring and launching high velocity bombs. The match was a see-saw affair; but late in the third set, Grotowski put together a couple of stuff blocks, and DiPierro managed to overhand dig some high speed spikes to put the match away. After the match, Grotowski stated: “Mike and i have always been very fortunate to get a lot of support from the Florida volleyball crowd! This is our third time playing together and it was really great to get a big win like this with Mike. Having our kids and family there was really cool too. The video work from the NVL was really great and will make for fun memories when the kids get older.” If Port St. Lucie is any indicator, there will be a great deal...

Ross/Walsh take gold, Dalhausser/Lucena bronze in Cincinnati - Articles

The top U.S. Olympic contenders medaled in Olympic qualifier competition at the FIVB Cincinnati event. On the women’s side, Kerri Walsh-Jennings and April Ross brought gold medals home, while Phil Dalhausser/Nick Lucena finished with bronze. For the women, the morning’s semifinals were relatively routine. No. 1 seed Ross/Walsh-Jennings sent No. 4 Elsa Baquerizo/Liliana Fernandez of Spain to the bronze match by a 21-14, 21-16 score. In the second semifinal, No. 13 Chen Xue/Xinyi Xia of China continued their cinderella run through the tournament, overcoming No. 11 Jantine evan der Vlist/Sophie van Gestel of the Netherlands 21-19, 21-17. In the battle for the Bronze, Baquerizo/Fernandez handled van der Vlist/van Gestel in straight sets 21-17, 21-18. Baquerizo are currently ranked 13th with 4,430 points. Cincinnati will replace their 12th lowest finish of 90 points/player with 200 points/player, increasing their score 220 points to 4,650 points. In the gold medal final, upstart Xue/Xia fought Ross/Walsh –Jennings blow-for-blow, and eventually got a couple of points to win game 1 22-20. Ross/Walsh-Jennings went on a tear to reach a 14-6 lead, but the Chinese scored 7 straight to close to 14-13. Ross then took control, scoring 6 straight points including three aces. After a Chinese sideout, Ross closed the second game 21-14 with a lob dig. Game three was relatively tight all the way through, with the U.S. nosing slightly ahead. With the U.S. up 13-10, China made a three point run including an ace by Xue. Xue’s subsequent serve was long, giving the U.S. its first match point. The teams...

The NVL begins season No. 6 - Articles

On Saturday, May 21st, the NVL opened its sixth season with the East Coast Championships at Club Med Sandpiper Bay in Port St. Lucie Florida. NVL tournament director Charles Warner: "In the first day of our season opener, everything seems to be going smoothly. I’m excited to be part of the NVL’s 6th season, and I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s matches." On the Men’s side: With eight teams making it to Sunday (two in winner’s bracket, six in the contender’s bracket), the No. 1 Skylar DelSol/Piotr Marciniak and No. 3 Jeff Samuels/Travis Schoonover seeds are through to the crossover semifinals in relatively routine fashion. Four teams remain in the contender’s bracket quarterfinals, No. 4 Skyler McCoy/Mark Williams, No. 8 Drew Hamilton/Daniel Lindsey, No. 2 Matt Henderson/Dave Palm, and No. 11 Matthew Clayton/John-Michael Plummer. No. 10 Mike DiPierro/Steven Grotowski and No. 12 Martin Caban Petr Doubravsky are waiting for them in the contender’s bracket semifinals. There were a few upsets in today’s play: No. 12 Martin Caban and Petr Doubravsky upset No. 5 Drew Mallin/Ryan Vandenburg (17-21, 21-15, 15-12), and No. 4 Skyler McCoy/Mark Williams (21-16, 21-18). Caban/Doubravsky are giving teams trouble with their brand of powerful play combined with consistency; they are clicking together better than most teams at this point in the season. No. 10 Mike DiPierro/Steven Grotowski upset No. 2 Matt Henderson/Dave Palm in the second round 21-16, 25-23. DiPierro’s ambidextrous skills trouble blockers and Grotowski is simply avoided due to his athleticism. On the Women’s side: The top two seeds, No. 1 Raquel...

Semifinalists determined at FIVB Cincinnati - Articles

As they say, “the rubber meets the road” today in elimination bracket play. After qualifying play and two days of pool play, the elimination bracket began for 24 teams per gender. The matches were rife with Olympic implications, so let’s take a look at today’s matches. First up, the women: No. 1 seed April Ross/Kerri Walsh Jennings passed their first challenge today over fellow Americans and No. 20 seed Lane Carico/Summer Ross 21-13, 19-21, 15-7. Carico/Ross earned the right to play Ross/Walsh Jennings by defeating their compatriots and No. 9 seed Emily Day/Jennifer Kessy. With the first round loss, Day/Kessy are unable to improve their Olympic qualification total. Ross/Jennings Walsh subsequently faced Teresa Mersmann/Isabel Schneider of Germany in the quarterfinals, a rematch of their pool A match. Ross/Walsh Jennings handled Mersmann/Schneider in straight sets, 21-15, 21-13. No. 3 Fendrick/Sweat came out of the gate winning both their matches today, first besting qualifiers and No. 31 Kim Behrens/Anni Schumacher of Germany 24-22, 21-13. In their second match, they survived a very athletic No. 7 Linline Matauatu/Pata Miller of Vanuatu 21-14, 17-21, 15-7. Fendrick/Sweat subsequently faced No. 4 Elsa Baquerizo and Liliana Fernandez of Spain under the lights. Fendrick/Sweat gave the Spaniards a spirited fight, but lost in a tight quarterfinal 12-21, 17-21 to finish 5th. Their fifth place finish is worth 150 points each; their twelth worst finish is 120 points, so they will increase the gap 30 points per player, bringing their lead over Kessy/Day from 430 points to 490 points with two Grand Slam events...

The sand courts are close to Sandpiper Bay with all of the distractions and gastronomic sensations that accompany Club Med. The NVL at Club Med Sandpiper Bay is also a very interactive experience. After the last ball drops, the players, staff, and fans head over to the NVL private dining room en masse, where everyone from the lowly photographers to the founder of the NVL, Al-B Hanneman, enjoy their post-tournament meal. Of course, the volleyball is what brings everyone together, so let’s review the top four seeds going into NVL season opener. Men No. 1 seed Dave Palm/Matt Henderson: Dave Palm is the reigning NVL MVP from 2015. Palm is a force at the net and from the service line, and has a sweet setting touch. This year Palm teams with Matt Henderson, who partnered with Piotr Marciniak much of the year, including a first-place finish at Madeira Beach. Henderson is a 10-year veteran of pro beach volleyball, undersized but over-skilled. The pair will definitely get their wins, but there is a great deal of parity this year. No. 2 seed Piotr Marciniak/Skylar DelSol: The NVL's Best Offensive player of 2015, Piotr Marciniak, married NVL star Karolina Sowala in the offseason. He returns with Skylar DelSol, who received the NVL Best Setter Award for 2015. The duo won the NVL Championships at Club Med, and...

Battle in Cincinnati - Articles

This is not just any AVP tournament that gets started today in Cincinnati. Rather, it’s an AVP-run FIVB event that is part of the Olympic qualification process, so expect plenty of intensity. On the other hand, the tournament is sandwiched between last week’s event in Turkey and the Grand Slam events in Moscow and Hamburg, so many of the top teams are choosing to avoid the jet lag associated with the trip to Cincinnati. As the host team, the U.S. is allowed additional teams, so in addition to April Ross/Kerri Walsh Jennings, Tri Bourne/John Hyden, Phil Dalhausser/Nick Lucena, Ryan Doherty/John Mayer, Jake Gibb/Casey Patterson, Robbie Page/Todd Rogers, Emily Day/Jen Kessy, Lauren Fendrick/Brooke Sweat and Jennifer Fopma/Brittany Hochevar are all in the main draw. U.S. teams in the qualifier include Lane Carico/Summer Ross, Kim DiCello/Kendra VanZwieten, Ali McColloch/Kelly Reeves, Irene Hester Pollock/Caitlin Ledoux, Taylor and Trevor Crabb, Jeremy Casebeer/Derek Olson, and Ian Satterfield/Raffe Paulis. There are plenty of dangerous international teams in the draw hoping to ruin the U.S. party. On the men's side, Brazilians Saymon Barbosa/Gustavo Carvalhaes scored a thirdrd this year, while 14th-ranked Canadians Chaim Schalk/Ben Saxton finished fifth at Xiamen. Mexicans Lombardo Ontiveros/Juan Virgen, ranked 17th, are a fiery team, with a fifth this year, and need to solidify their Olympic rankings. For the women, two Canadian teams are particularly strong. Fifth-ranked Sarah Pavan/Heather Bansley should be fresh after a two-month break. and 11th-ranked Jamie Broder/Kristina Valjas have had an up-and-down year but remain one of the most dangerous teams in the draw. Optimistic assessment of the men’s game by George Mason’s Jay Hosack - Articles

George Mason head coach Jay Hosack has been involved in the game at the highest levels, including serving as an assistant coach for both USA men’s and women’s national teams and serving as a longtime assistant to men’s coach Mark Pavlik at Penn State. A year ago he took over at Mason and took the Patriots to their first trip to the NCAA tournament in 28 years. Hosack, the EIVA coach of the year, cares greatly about NCAA men’s volleyball and has many thoughts about its current situation and future, one that he says is a bright one. The final score: 1,060 to 109. Not even close. If it were a match, the losers would go home and lick their wounds, since it was a butt whupping by any standard. But it’s not a match score or even a season’s worth of match scores. Rather, this is the number of NCAA women’s volleyball programs compared to the number of men’s programs in the country. The numbers look like this (from the website scholarshipstats.com) Number of programs Men Women NCAA Division I — 23 men, 334 women NCAA Division II — 17 men, 294 women NCAA Division III — 69 men, 432 women Totals — 109 men, 1,060 women This doesn’t even take into account the NAIA (223 women’s programs as compared to 22 men’s), junior colleges (188 women’s,17 men’s), or the emerging NCAA beach volleyball programs, which we won’t even add into the equation because some of them are considered to be “dual” programs with some...

FIVB Antalya Open and U21 Lucerne recap - Articles

There were two major beach events this past weekend, the FIVB Antalya Open in Turkey and the FIVB Under 21 World Beach Championships, the latter including some of the NCAA Beach players who were in action in Gulf Shores, Ala., last weekend. Janis Smedins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs of Latvia Antalya won gold. The fourth-seeded pair received a walkover in the gold-medal final as Lars Fluggen re-aggravated his left meniscus from an injury in April that required surgery. On their way to the final, Smedins/Samolilovs beat three Polish teams, No. 14 Kadziola/Szalankiewicz of Poland 2-0 (21-18, 21-16), No. 26 Bryl/Kujawiak 2-1 (21-15, 23-25,15-9), and No. 6 Fijalek/Prudel 2-1 (18-21, 25-23, 15-13). Fijalek/Prudel took bronze in a 21-14, 21-13 win over Kotsilianos/Zoupanis of Greece. Kotsilianos/Zoupanis semifinal finish is the first ever for Greece. Ninth-seeded seeded Fluggen/Bockermann marched into the finals by virtue of wins over No. 12 Kapa/McHugh (Australia) 21-16, 21-18), No. 3 Hyden/Bourne (USA) 21-19, 16-21, 15-11), No. 1 Nummerdor/Varenhorst (Netherlands), as well as avenging an earlier pool play loss to qualifiers Georgios Kotsilianos/Nikos Zoupanis (Greece) 21-16, 21-17. The Fluggen injury comes at a critical time in the Olympic qualification process. a href=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJDaztK1k74> Interview courtesy of FIVB here: With only three events remaining, Fluggen/Bockermann are fighting to stay in the top 17 to earn an Olympic berth. Fluggen/Bockermann added 210 points to their total this weekend to reach 4,610 points and 14th place. Germany does not currently have three teams in the top 17, so Fluggen/Bockermann can qualify by either finishing in the top 17 or by...

California Footvolley Championships - Articles

In 1965, a group of beach soccer players were playing on Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach. But the lifeguards banned soccer on the beach. And that’s how footvolley was born. Footvolley is played much like volleyball, but you can’t use your hands or arms. Players kick serve, serve receive with their chests, set with their shoulders or chests, and spike with their heads or feet. The most exciting play in footvolley is the "shark attack", when a player leaps into the air, inverts 180 degrees, and spikes the ball with the sole of the foot. There is also the "eagle attack", where a player executes a soccer style bicycle kick and spikes with the top of the foot. See an example here: Footvolley is played on an old-school volleyball court, 29 feet, 6 inches by 29 feet, 6 inches, with a soccer ball. Games are rally scoring to 18 points with a net height of 7-2. This year a footvolley event will be held in between the Olympics and Paralympics August 25-28 in the main beach volleyball arena. That coincides with the California Footvolley Championships, which are set for August 26-28 at the Huntington Beach pier. California Footvolley founder Giordano Carretta sought to bring the game to the West Coast. His company sponsors tournaments as well as classes for kids and adults. More information can be found here: Carretta sponsors the California Footvolley World Championships, a tournament that features players from Brazil, Italy, Russia, and the U.S. He founded the event in 2013 in response to...
