California Footvolley Championships - Articles

In 1965, a group of beach soccer players were playing on Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach. But the lifeguards banned soccer on the beach. And that’s how footvolley was born. Footvolley is played much like volleyball, but you can’t use your hands or arms. Players kick serve, serve receive with their chests, set with their shoulders or chests, and spike with their heads or feet. The most exciting play in footvolley is the "shark attack", when a player leaps into the air, inverts 180 degrees, and spikes the ball with the sole of the foot. There is also the "eagle attack", where a player executes a soccer style bicycle kick and spikes with the top of the foot. See an example here: Footvolley is played on an old-school volleyball court, 29 feet, 6 inches by 29 feet, 6 inches, with a soccer ball. Games are rally scoring to 18 points with a net height of 7-2. This year a footvolley event will be held in between the Olympics and Paralympics August 25-28 in the main beach volleyball arena. That coincides with the California Footvolley Championships, which are set for August 26-28 at the Huntington Beach pier.
