On Saturday, May 21st, the NVL opened its sixth season with the East Coast Championships at Club Med Sandpiper Bay in Port St. Lucie Florida. NVL tournament director Charles Warner: "In the first day of our season opener, everything seems to be going smoothly. I’m excited to be part of the NVL’s 6th season, and I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s matches." On the Men’s side: With eight teams making it to Sunday (two in winner’s bracket, six in the contender’s bracket), the No. 1 Skylar DelSol/Piotr Marciniak and No. 3 Jeff Samuels/Travis Schoonover seeds are through to the crossover semifinals in relatively routine fashion. Four teams remain in the contender’s bracket quarterfinals, No. 4 Skyler McCoy/Mark Williams, No. 8 Drew Hamilton/Daniel Lindsey, No. 2 Matt Henderson/Dave Palm, and No. 11 Matthew Clayton/John-Michael Plummer. No. 10 Mike DiPierro/Steven Grotowski and No. 12 Martin Caban Petr Doubravsky are waiting for them in the contender’s bracket semifinals. There were a few upsets in today’s play: No. 12 Martin Caban and Petr Doubravsky upset No. 5 Drew Mallin/Ryan Vandenburg (17-21, 21-15, 15-12), and No. 4 Skyler McCoy/Mark Williams (21-16, 21-18). Caban/Doubravsky are giving teams trouble with their brand of powerful play combined with consistency; they are clicking together better than most teams at this point in the season. No. 10 Mike DiPierro/Steven Grotowski upset No. 2 Matt Henderson/Dave Palm in the second round 21-16, 25-23. DiPierro’s ambidextrous skills trouble blockers and Grotowski is simply avoided due to his athleticism. On the Women’s side: The top two seeds, No. 1 Raquel...
