Beach Volleyball Olympic qualification demystified - Articles

Let’s face it: The qualifying process is really confusing. So here you go, everything you wanted to know about the 2016 Olympic Beach Volleyball Qualification but were afraid to ask. And there’s a simple summary at the bottom once you get through the explanations. Would you like to be one of the 24 beach volleyball teams in the Rio Olympics? First, you must participate in a minimum of 12 FIVB Olympic Qualification tournaments between January 1, 2015, and June 12, 2016. Once you’ve done that, there are five ways to qualify: 1. Host the Olympics. Evandro Goncalves/Pedro Solberg and Larissa Franca/Talita Antunes of Brazil are the designated host teams. 2. Win the 2015 World Championships in the Netherlands. Alison Cerutti/Bruno Schmidt and Agatha Bednarczuk/Barbara Seixas of Brazil did that. They are in. Yes, the Brazilian teams are now sipping a caipirinha (that’s like a Brazilian Mai Tai) in the shade, watching the rest of the world battle it out for the remaining Olympic berths. 3. The 15 highest-ranked teams as of June 13, 2016 will each earn berths in the Olympics. Rankings are determined by a team’s 12 highest finishes in Grand Slam and Open tournaments during the Qualification period (January 1, 2015 to June 12, 2016). However, there is a maximum of two teams per country, so if you’re 10th-ranked Juliana Felisberta/Maria Antonelli of Brazil, 14th-ranked Karin Holtwick/Ilka Semmler of Germany, 17th-ranked Jen Kessy/Emily Day, or 15th-ranked Tri Bourne and John Hyden, you can’t qualify unless you overtake one of your countrymen. Only FIVB Grand...

Three nationally ranked beach teams to meet in the Outrigger Resorts Aloha Invitational - Articles

Waikiki Beach, HI – Six women’s NCAA beach volleyball teams are converging on Waikiki Beach for the Outrigger Resorts Aloha Invitational. The field includes top-ranked USC, No. 5 Hawaii, and No. 6 Long Beach State. Powerhouse USC (23-2) brings a 19 match win streak to the Aloha. Local favorite Hawaii (11-6) looks to improve upon its second-place finish in 2015. Defending-champion Long Beach State (9-10) hopes to repeat last year’s performance. Also participating are the University of Louisiana-Monroe (10-15), Grand Canyon University (15-6), and the University of Washington (3-1). “We must prepare for every situation,” said USC head coach Anna Collier. “We preach improvement, growth, and development; we seek a one-percent improvement every time out.” USC has a trio of seniors leading the charge. Alexa Strange has played solidly at the No. 2 spot, and has accepted a leadership role. Zoe Nightingale, a graduate transfer from UCLA, has been winning at the No. 5 spot. Emily Young, a sixth-year graduate student, is affectionately known as “grandma” because of her wealth of USC experience. Juniors Sara Hughes and Kelly Claes have been spectacular this year, earning a 31-0 record while dropping just one set. Top Seeds Take Titles in New Orleans - Articles

Kenner, La. — The top seeds reigned supreme in the AVP New Orleans Open Sunday afternoon. Men’s No.1 pair John Mayer and Ryan Doherty and women’s No. 1 Kim DiCello and Kendra Van Zwieten navigated the fierce competition and windy conditions this weekend to capture the first AVP titles of the 2016 season. Mayer and Doherty dispatched the Crabb brothers in straight sets to advance to the finals against Casey Patterson and Jake Gibb, who advanced to their second straight New Orleans Open finals after Mark Burik and Russ Marchewka forfeited the semi-final round Sunday morning. Last year Patterson and Gibb defeated Mayer and Doherty in three sets in the semi-finals of the New Orleans Open. This year was a different story. Patterson started off the finals with an ace, an omen of a dominant first set in which he and Gibb would blast Mayer and Doherty 21-9. “We were trying to move on, and we knew we’d play better,” Mayer said of the poor showing in set one. “I thought we needed a little energy to come out in the second (set). The big mantra for me all weekend was ‘Be present.’ If I’m thinking about 21-9 at the start of the second set, then I’m not present.” After weathering a difficult first set, Mayer and Doherty stormed back for a 21-17 win in the second set. The top seeded pair found its swagger in set two, and Mayer rediscovered his serve, which had been erratic for most of his first three sets Sunday. “I...

Winning with Style - Articles

Kenner, La. –- The most entertaining man on the AVP circuit has victory, and dancing, on the mind, as he and partner Jake Gibb continue the quest to defend their AVP New Orleans Open title Sunday in the semifinal round against Mark Burik and Russ Marchewka. Casey Patterson, the 35-year old, mohawked tour veteran is ready to start the 2016 AVP season off with a win, then bust out some of his signature sweet dance moves. “If we’re playing well, I’m dancing,” Patterson said. “At the same, I respect a lot of the players, and there are certain players I won’t do it to because I know it makes them play better.” Patterson and Gibb overcame opening set losses in Saturday matches against Theo Brunner and Sean Rosenthal, then Brad Keenan and Ty Tramblie in the quarterfinals, to advance to the final day of the AVP New Orleans Open. “We expect ourselves to be able to play at a high level and make these guys really have to play hard to beat us,” Patterson said. Winning would be enough for most competitors, but Patterson wants to entertain the spectators every time he steps foot on the court. A natural showman, Patterson thrives off of entertaining the crowd during his matches. “I love to get the crowd involved, entertain and call out guys (in the crowd),” Patterson said. During the first set of Patterson and Gibb’s quarterfinal matchup against Keenan and Tramblie, Patterson had some fun with Tramblie’s buddy sitting in the stands. “Brad (Keenan) aced me...

Never Gone - Beach

KENNER, La. — Don’t call it a comeback. Misty May-Treanor says she never left. Though May-Treanor retired from international beach volleyball following her third consecutive gold medal in the 2012 Olympics, she contends that she is not done with the sport. “I retired internationally, and I think everyone took that to the extent that I retired from the sport completely,” May-Treanor said Friday at the AVP New Orleans, the kickoff event for the 2016 tour. She and teammate Jenny Kropp, seeded second, defeated qualifiers Bree Scarbrough and Brittany Tiegs 21-17, 21-13. “I think as an athlete, you don’t have to say ‘I retired’ because you can do it for enjoyment. If you do it from enjoyment, there is no retirement.” Since “retiring” from beach volleyball in 2012, May-Treanor’s priorities have shifted from champion athlete to that of motherhood.“I don’t want to travel overseas anymore,” May-Treanor said. “I want to start a family and be home. It’s for fun. It’s a hobby now, it’s not a job.” Even though fans will not see May-Treanor playing overseas anytime soon, the three-time Olympic gold medalist still wants to play the sport she dominated for nearly a decade. “It’s fun for me,” May-Treanor said. Fun is the primary reason May-Treanor has teamed with Jenny Kropp fNew Orleans, despite never playing with Kropp and barely playing against her.May-Treanor is the first to admit she is unable to prepare and “put in the hours” that made her an Olympic gold medalist, but embraces her role coming out of the beach volleyball bullpen....
