The USA won both gold medals, defeating Canadians at home, at NorCECA North Bay in Ontario, Canada, this past Saturday. Marty Lorenz/Adam Roberts beat Canada’s Christian Redmann/Felipe Humana-Paredes 21-17, 15-21, 15-9. And the USC pair of Sara Hughes/Kelly Claes beat Julie Gordon/Brandie Wilkerson 21-16, 21-13. “It definitely was a battle,” Roberts said. “Christian Redmann is an experienced player and he’s very calm and collected,” said Roberts. “The final was great. We played those guys in pool play and we battled,” said Lorenz, who has been paired with Roberts since October 2015. “It could have gone either way both times.” Mike Plantinga/Cam Wheelan of Canada earned the bronze over the USA’s Miles Evans/Spencer McLachlin 21-16, 18-21, 15-9. “We stuck to our game plan, and we struggled a bit in the second set siding out. But we made sure we stayed aggressive,” said Plantinga. “We’re bigger than both guys, so we were just hitting high and hard and scoring points that way. We always have good battles against the U.S.” Hughes/Claes beat Americans Ali McColloch/Kelly Reeves in the semifinals. “The event was great. We lost to Wilkerson and Gordon in pool play, so it was fun to bounce back and play them again and change up our game plan, which really worked for us as you can tell from the scores in the final,” Hughes said. “Our semifinal when we played our USA1 team — and they are such a great team — was a battle and we didn’t give up and we ended up beating them.
