April Ross' Five tips for serving effectively - Articles

April Ross is the most feared beach-volleyball server in the world. The 2012 Olympic silver medalist was named FIVB Best Server in 2011, 2012, and 2015. We caught up with her shortly before she and partner Kerri Walsh Jennings left for Rio and Ross offered five tips on serving effectively: 1. Pick a specific spot on the court that you want to serve. Pick a two by two inch target and focus on serving the ball to that two inch square. 2. Serving is all about the toss. I’m an advocate of purely practicing the toss. Don’t worry about the serve, just practice the toss over and over. 3. Don’t focus on the power of your serve, focus on the ball to hand contact. Make sure you get a good solid contact. 4. Definitely take stock of the wind. Make sure you know which way the wind is blowing and use that to your advantage by serving into the wind. 5. Don’t hit the same serve over and over and over again. Switch up the speed, switch up the trajectory, and switch up the serve depth, even if it means it will be a slower serve. Keep your opponents off balance. Oh, and eat Uncrustables before you serve, it will make you unstoppable.

Jordan Kohl on USA World Deaf title: “The feeling was indescribable” - Articles

When Jordan Kohl was 3, her parents realized that something was wrong. Their daughter wasn’t forming full sentences the way she should and wasn’t able to say certain words. They had Jordan’s hearing tested, and found that she had about 58-59 decibels of hearing loss in both ears. It’s likely that the last thing they considered at that time was that their daughter would grow to 6-foot-3 and 20 years later lead the USA to its first World Deaf Volleyball Championships gold medal. Kohl will be a junior at Texas State, where last season the right side led the team in kills (289), kills per set (2.78) and was third in blocks (61). The 2014 Sun Belt Conference freshman of the year has 60-72 decibels of hearing loss, and the doctors are unable to explain the source of her hearing loss. “She’s a major part of our team,” longtime Texas State coach Karen Chisum said. “She’s a strong left-handed player, was an all-conference player last year, she is a dominating force. The setter knows to make eye contact with her when calling plays just in case. It really doesn’t hinder her at all.” Kohl’s hearing aid restores 50 decibels of her hearing loss, at least until her hearing aid pops out when she gets sweaty or the battery dies. At the World tournament, hearing aids are not allowed, so the team has to develop systems to communicate. “In the deaf games, we’ll usually confirm everything with hand signals,” Kohl said in a telephone interview. “Being hearing...

Baylee Johnson no longer with USC volleyball team - Articles

Baylee Johnson is no longer on the USC volleyball team. “She rendered herself academically ineligible,” USC coach Mick Haley said Wednesday. “And that’s about all I can share with you.” Johnson, a 6-footer from Dayton, Ohio, enrolled early at USC in 2015 and was a standout freshman last season, part of a 6-2 offense in which she played every one of USC’s 130 sets. The Women of Troy, ranked No. 1 much of the season, finished 33-3, losing to Kansas in the NCAA regional final, 15-13 in the fifth. In that match Johnson had her 19th double-double of the season with a career-high 45 assists to go with 15 digs and six blocks (one solo). Johnson, who played all the way around, had 936 assists last season, 110 kills and 67 blocks (four solo) The surprising turn of events leaves USC with one returning setter in Alice Pizzasegola, who ran a 6-2 with Johnson, and transfer Nikki Leonard. Pizzasegola, a 5-10 senior from Italy, played in all 36 matches and had 651 assists. Leonard, a 5-8 junior from Bakersfield, Calif., played two seasons at Gonzaga. Last year she played in in 18 matches and 56 sets and had a career high 3.98 assists per set. Haley put a positive spin on the situation. “Because of the uncertainty of her, though, our team is much more comfortable because they know who is going to be here now,” said Haley, who will start his 16th season at USC and 40th overall. “I think Nikki Leonard is a good...

Olympics official: "The pressure is unbelievable" - Articles

At the Rio Olympics, 20 indoor and 16 beach referees will be tasked with judging and administrating the matches fairly. VBM had a chance to chat with Dan Apol, the USA designated beach referee (Patricia Rolf, the former Marquette coach, is the USA designated indoor referee). Apol, a ref since 1991, is a full-time volleyball official. He lives in Castle Rock, Denver, and is one of a handful of referees in the world who have both the International FIVB beach and International Para-volley (handicapped) certifications and is also an NCAA official. He has 12 years of International experience and was an Olympic referee in London 2012. As you might imagine, an international referee racks up plenty of frequent-flyer miles. Apol has officiated in 30 different countries and will spend 87 days this year officiating outside the U.S. Referees must be selected by USA volleyball to become a national official. It takes a minimum of three years to become a national referee, candidates must attend a variety of training programs and be evaluated numerous times. What’s more, candidates must attend international referee school prior to age 41. There are one or two international clinics per year. International beach referees are forced to retire at age 55. "Beach is an image sport, they want their officials to be youthful and be fit as well,” Apol said, adding that on the average international beach referees are 15 years younger than their indoor counterparts. VBM and Apol visited on a number of topics, starting with the difference between the Olympics...

Denny Lennon, AAU Beach National Director - Articles

Volleyball Magazine caught up with AAU Beach National Director Denny Lennon at the West Coast AAU Junior Olympic Games Invitational in Hermosa Beach. Lennon, a former WPVA (Women's Professional Volleyball Association) stage announcer, heads the AAU beach operation along with National Volleyball Commissioner Gino Grajeda. The West Coast Junior Olympics Games Invitational features 324 teams, from 30 states. To qualify, each team must have medaled in one of the AAU's 165 events conducted in almost every state. Lennon and Grajeda started the AAU in 1994. They had to put up their own poles and courts in Cabrillo beach in San Pedro. "No one else would give us a beach, so we had to be there, and it took off from there.", said Lennon. "Back then, I think Charlie Saikley ran one Junior tournament in Manhattan, and I think someone ran one up at the Santa Monica Pier. I think they were both CBVA. That was it. Kids really didn't have anything for them. Now there are a lot of opportunities. Today there are over 170,000 junior volleyball athletes registered with the AAU, although I don't know how many of those are indoor and how many are outdoor." Junior beach volleyball recently received a boost when it was added as a college sport. "It has increased enrollment overall, but in particular it has created clubs that are beach specific, with high-level training and coaching. That has all really gone up. Whether it is in pursuit of a college scholarship, or it is maybe more that the sport...

Nick Lucena's five quick tips on hitting around a huge block: - Articles

At 6-foot-1, Nick Lucena is one of the more diminutive players on the world professional beach tour, earning a living battling the huge trees like the Netherland's 6-11 Christiaan Varenhorst, the USA's 7-1 Ryan Doherty, and Brazil's 6-11 Evandro Goncalves. More often than not, he has won the battle, with four gold, two silver, and one bronze medal on tour this year with partner Phil Dalhausser. The Olympic medal contender has this advice for those forced to face physically imposing blocks: 1. I make sure I can pass the ball as perfectly as I can. If you're not in system, then you're in trouble. It doesn't matter how big you are. 2. I try and stay behind the ball, try and be as late as possible getting to the ball, that helps me with my vision. With the super big guys, it's always good to beat them low. I try to beat them low and fast, and keep my arm locked and loaded and try and change the pace of my swing. 3. When all else fails I try and hit between their hands and hopefully hit their head every once in a while. 4. A lot of time you can just hit at the block, they'll make some big moves and you can get away with it. I learned that by watching Todd. I've also been blocked a lot of times with this technique. 5. Last and most important, another thing is to make sure your partner is a good setter. Otherwise you're in trouble.

Q & A with Kelsey Robinson, USA outside hitter - Articles

Kelsey Robinson, a 6-foot-2 outside hitter from Bartlett, Ill., was recently named to the USA Olympic team. Robinson has trained with the USA national team since 2014, was an AVCA All-American, Big Ten player of the year at Nebraska, and was named second-best outside spiker in the 2015 FIVB World Grand Prix. We caught up with Robinson shortly after the Olympic announcement. VBM: Congratulations on being named to the Olympic team. How did that feel? "I woke up this morning, and saw that everything had been released, and it really didn't feel real. Then I saw a text from Courtney Thompson and just started crying." "I don't think anyone really realizes how deep the competition is in our gym. How many girls cycle in over a four-year period. To be a part of it is super humbling." VBM: What lessons did the team glean from the Grand Prix (losing to Brazil in the final)? "It's about finding our edge, and finding who we are as a team. It's obviously not the result we wanted, but I think our team responds to failure really well. In 2014, after a loss in Grand Prix, we ended up winning the World Championships. This gives us things to work on. We have training blocks coming up to really get better in those areas and get after it." "We have to own our speed, and own who we are as a team. I don't think it's anything that other teams are doing to us, we need to be great on our...

Mark Burik's perspective on the Manhattan Beach Open - Articles

Volleyball magazine is excited to have AVP and overall beach veteran Mark Burik writing about the AVP tour this season. This is his take on AVP Manhattan: The Manhattan Beach Open is a tournament unlike any other. It has a mystique to it that no other beach volleyball event can match. In my eyes, this is the tournament that allows every player the opportunity to announce and show off their place in the volleyball world. It’s where you can put your stamp on history and enter your name into beach volleyball lore. The Manhattan Beach Open is half social event, half gladiator ring. It’s where retirees come out of the woodwork for one last tango. It’s where the rookies have the chance to get in the ring with big boys and throw some haymakers. With a historically larger field, the MBO features matches you would otherwise never get to witness. To say this weekend is special every year would be doing it an injustice. The Manhattan Beach Open is beach volleyball magic and anyone who gets to take part feels it course through their veins the whole weekend long. As much as this is an opportunity to stand out, this tournament in particular can also be a dangerous investment for a player. It is widely known that when compared with the others, California tournaments are significantly stronger. Travel is less arduous for teams that are just getting into their pro careers AND for players who have lost interest in playing but are still very capable. For...

Exactly how good are Sara Hughes and Kelly Claes? - Articles

Sara Hughes and Kelly Claes, who will be seniors at USC and haven’t lost a match in college since midway through their sophomore seasons, are building quite a beach volleyball resume. The AVCA and DiG Magazine All-Americans won NorCECA gold in Canada, lost in the championship match at AVP San Francisco and placed third at AVP New York. And then this past Sunday they won the the FISU World University Games in Estonia with a 21-16, 21-13 win over Madison and McKenna Witt, their Arizona and Pac-12 rivals. The 5-foot-10 Hughes, from Costa Mesa, Calif., and the 6-2 Claes, from Fullerton, went 48-0 in NCAA beach last spring, clinching the inaugural championship in Gulf Shores, Ala., with a signature dominant victory. What’s more, they’ve won 73 consecutive college matches. Exactly how good are they? Do they have what it takes to represent the U.S. at Tokyo in 2020? We asked three volleyball experts: Dain Blanton (2000 Sydney Olympic gold medalist, USC beach assistant coach, NBC volleyball analyst); Holly McPeak (three time beach Olympian, bronze medalist, Pac-12 volleyball analyst, 2009 Hall of Fame inductee, the first woman to surpass $1 million in winnings); Dr. Gary Sato (former head coach of the USA and Japanese national indoor teams, head coach of the 2007 beach volleyball at the Pan Am Games). VBM: Exactly how good are Sarah Hughes/Kelly Claes today? How do they compare today with their college peers, and AVP field? What do they need to get to the next level? Patterson explodes with joy after Manhattan Beach victory - Articles

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. – Casey Patterson couldn’t wait. His shot hit the sand, suddenly he was a champion of the AVP Manhattan Beach Open, and he ran from the moment. He ran to the past, sprinting across the scorching sand to the baseline box seats where he jumped in and gave hugs to Randy Stoklos, Jim Menges, Steve Obradovich and Tim Hovland. For those keeping score, that’s a foursome who accounted for 17 Manhattan titles in the 57 years of the tournament. After Patterson and Jake Gibb captured Sunday’s Manhattan crown with a 17-21, 21-18, 16-14 win over Tri Bourne and John Hyden, Patterson let loose. “The entire match, I was looking to them for just the aura and magic they had from when they were playing to fuel me,” Patterson said. “I felt like that was the key for me. It was just taking one point at a time to try to be on the pier with those guys because they’re all gods, and you want to go down and be remembered as one of the players on the pier.” The Manhattan Beach Pier is the home of plaques commemorating every Manhattan Open champion since the tournament began in 1960. Brittany Hochevar could wait. She had nothing but patience, which she has had to learn many times the hard way in a long career. About two hours after Patterson’s right arm ended the men’s portion, Hochevar’s swing not only made her a Manhattan champ, but a first-time winner on the AVP Tour in any event....

Dalhausser confident after AVP Manhattan Saturday - Articles

By Phil Collin for VolleyballMag.com MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif – Phil Dalhausser walked off the court Saturday afternoon, leaned against a railing, and uttered words the rest of the AVP Tour does not want to hear. “If we play like that, we’re going to win,” Dalhausser said. “I guarantee that.” It was a convincing 21-18, 21-12 victory that Dalhausser and Nick Lucena recorded over John Hyden and Tri Bourne that inspired Dalhausser, who’s not exactly known as a player who will pop off with crazy predictions. But he couldn’t be blamed for looking ahead to the final day of the AVP Manhattan Beach Open. Of course, it’s not going to be easy as Dalhausser continues his pursuit of Karch Kiraly’s record of seven Manhattan victories. Dalhausser is seeking his sixth, and second in a row with Lucena. In their way are Trevor and Taylor Crabb, the brothers who keep knocking on the door trying to capture their first title together and the only other team with a 4-0 record after two days. Top-seeded Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson came out of the contenders bracket to also reach the final four, as did John Hyden and Tri Bourne. On the women’s side, top-seeded Lane Carico and Summer Ross rolled into Sunday’s semifinals with a 4-0 record. The other undefeated team is second-seeded Kim DiCello and Kendra VanZwieten, who are seeking their second AVP title together after capturing the New Orleans Open earlier this year. Claes and Hughes Take Gold at World University Championships - Articles

Article by Jeremy Wu, USC Athletics: PARNÃœ, Estonia – USC beach volleyball seniors Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes captured gold medals at the FISU World University Championships on Sunday, July 17. The Women of Troy defeated twin sisters Madison and McKenna Witt of Arizona in an all-USA final, 21-16, 21-13. Overall, Claes and Hughes went 7-0 in the world tourney and didn’t drop a single set in their run. The Witt sisters were a familiar foe for the Trojan tandem. They are 5-0 against the Witts in NCAA collegiate competition over the last two seasons. Claes and Hughes were seeded No. 2 and emerged from pool play with three decisive victories. The longest of the duo’s matches lasted just 34 minutes. The Trojan pair started the week with a 21-15, 21-17 win over Julie and Nicole Dietrich of Switzerland. They then defeated Alise Pastare and Ruta Treija of Latvia, 21-11, 21-9, and closed out pool competition with a 21-18, 21-10 win over Germany’s team of Sandra Ittlinger and Yanina Weiland. With a first-round bye in hand, Claes and Hughes took fresh legs into the round of 16 and defeated the 17th-seeded duo of Lézana Placette and Alexia Richard of France, 21-11, 21-9, in just 22 minutes. They matched up against No. 13-seed Anja Dörfler and Julia Radl of Austria in the quarterfinals and picked up a 21-10, 21-12 victory. Double the fun for the Marciniaks at NVL Columbus - Articles

There was celebration in the Marciniak household Saturday as both Piotr Marciniak/Skylar DelSol and Karolina Marciniak/Raquel Ferreira won NVL Columbus (Ohio) championships. The newlywed couple had never won NVL doubles championships on the same day, although they were crowned King and Queen of the Beach at NVL Vegas in 2013. Including today’s wins, Piotr has five NVL titles, Karolina nine. One of their goals for this year was to win NVL on the same day, according to Piotr. “Either you win, or I win, so let’s win on the same day. Let’s make it happen. It finally did, and I’m really happy about this tournament,” Piotr Marciniak said. “My partner played great in the finals, he totally took over the game. Our teamwork is improving every tournament.” Karolina added, “Hopefully we can win a couple more tournaments together this year. Port St. Lucie is the big one for us. We’ll definitely be ready for that one, that’s our goal.” In the women’s final, Karolina/Ferreira avenged last night’s loss to No. 4 Kim Hildreth/Maryna Samoday 21-16, 15-21, 15-12. Then Piotr/DelSol won in straight sets 21-14, 21-17 over No. 1 Dave Palm/Eric Zaun, completing the Marciniak sweep. There were relatively few upsets in Columbus on Saturday. The top seeded teams came through on both the men’s and women’s sides. No. 6 Laurie Bachler/Kaley Melville pulled off a minor upset (21-19, 19-21, 15-9) over No. 5 Lauren Dickson/Jayna Duke. Brazil doing its damndest to mess up the USA in volleyball - Articles

Damn, Brazil. Or is that damn Brazil? Either way, just consider what the host country for the Olympics has done to USA volleyball the past couple of weeks. In the FIVB Grand Prix championship match July 10 in Bangkok, Thailand, the U.S. women lost to Brazil. In the FIVB World League in Krakow, Poland, the U.S. men lost to Brazil in pool play on Friday and were eliminated from the tournament. In the most recent international FIVB beach tournament, in Gstaad, Switzerland, the U.S. pair of Nick Lucena and Phil Dalhausser lost to Brazilians Pedro Solberg and Evandro (you know how those Brazilians go by one name) in two sets. And on the women’s side of that tournament, the USA’s April Ross and Kerri Walsh Jennings lost to Brazilians Talita Antunes and Larissa (just Larissa) in two in a defeat that took just 33 minutes. Yikes. As an inquiring sportswriter might ask, if you can’t beat ‘em on a neutral site, how you gonna beat ‘em in Rio? Both the women’s and men’s indoor defeats were in five, although in the case of the men, it stung even more, since they were up 2-0 in sets, lost the third 28-26, and were ahead 12-10 in the fifth before losing the last five points. What’s more, they knew going into the match they had to win in either three or four to advance to the semifinals, so the fifth set was a moot point for the USA. And here’s the dagger: Brazil played mostly its second team....

NVL Columbus day one recap - Articles

Most of the higher-seeded teams sailed through Friday at NVL Columbus (Ohio). The top four women’s seeds made the winners-bracket semifinals. No. 4 Kimberly Hildreth/Maryna Samoday beat No. 1 Raquel Ferreira/Karolina Marciniak 21-19, 15-21, 15-12. “That’s a team we’ve been waiting to play all year,” Hildreth. “I train with Raquel, and I’ve played with Kaya a lot, so I know them better than anyone. We’ve been playing together for two weeks, and we’re undefeated for the four tournaments, so I felt really confident coming into this match.” No. 2 Kristen Batt-Rohr/Priscilla Piantadosi-Lima outlasted No. 3 Chara Harris/Jennifer Snyder 21-13, 13-21, 15-10 to earn the second semifinal spot. Some of the lower-seeded teams had success as well. No. 12 Kyra Lancon/Lindsey Shepard upended No. 5 Lauren Dickson/Jayna Duke 21-16, 13-21, 15-10. No. 10 Julia Colina/Kaitlyn Leary sent No. 7 Kimberly Hohl/Johanna Schatz to the contenders bracket 21-16, 21-14. No. 15 Amy Grabiec/Kristin Heldt eliminated No. 7 Hohl/Schatz 21-16, 21-16. The energy and overall atmosphere were awesome. The NVL is definitely a family style tour and even though it was our first time in the main draw everyone was really welcoming. We had a blast!” On the men’s side, No. 1 Dave Palm/Eric Zaun and No. 2 Piotr Marciniak/Skylar DelSol marched into the semifinals....

Gibb and Patterson focus on AVP Manhattan - Articles

By Phil Collin for VolleyballMag.com MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. — The 2016 Manhattan Beach Open might be a jumping-off point for United States Olympians Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson. Just don’t refer to it as a stepping stone on their way to Rio de Janeiro. “It’s perfect,” Gibb said after he and Patterson captured their first two matches of the storied event on the south side of the Manhattan Beach Pier. “It’s awesome because all we’re thinking about is winning the Manhattan Open. That’s what’s on our mind right now. “And once we’re done, we’re going to focus on Rio, but right now it’s just such an awesome event that that’s all we’re thinking about it and it’s fun to put all your energy into something, because that’s what we’re going to be like in Rio. It’s a nice event before the Olympics.” If there is any common motivational tool for Americans playing beach volleyball it’s to conquer Manhattan and join legends with plaques on the pier. Gibb has won the event twice, with Stein Metzger in 2005 and Sean Rosenthal in 2009, but the two-time Olympian doesn’t want a miss a chance to win another. Especially since Patterson has never won in Manhattan. The top-seeded duo, though, have won 12 AVP Tour events together. Gibb and Patterson are looking for their third AVP title of 2016. They’ve squeezed those events into their grueling FIVB World Tour schedule, which not only included the pressure of the chase in Olympic qualifying, but an international schedule that has taken...

USA Men finish sixth in World League following loss to Brazil - Articles

The U.S. Men’s National Team saw its hopes of advancing to the semifinals of the FIVB World League fade away with a 24-26, 21-25, 28-26, 25-21, 15-12 loss to Brazil on Friday at Tauron Arena. The U.S. Men finish World League with an 8-3 record overall and a sixth-place finish. On Saturday, Serbia will play Italy in one semifinal while France will play Brazil in the other. The United States went into Friday’s match knowing it needed a three points to beat Italy and advance to the semifinals. That meant it had to beat Brazil, 3-0 or 3-1. “(Brazil) put out mostly reserve (players) and they played at a very high level,” U.S. Head Coach John Speraw said. “I thought that we played with much better enthusiasm ourselves, but we just didn’t execute. We truly have not executed at a level we would wish for most of the summer. Max Holt: “We’re going to have to take this break before the Olympic Games and evaluate, regroup and train as hard as we can to come back and play at a level we have been at the last two summers.” After the U.S. had won the first two sets, the match came down to the final points of the third. With Brazil leading 23-20, U.S. setter Micah Christenson dumped the ball and middle blocker David Lee followed by blocking Brazil’s Eder Carbonera. Outside hitter Taylor Sander’s attack on the next play looked like it went out of bounds, but a challenge by Speraw showed it had been...

AVP Manhattan Beach Open qualifier results - Articles

The AVP Manhattan Beach Open got under way Thursday with qualifying rounds. Eight women’s and eight men’s pairs made it into the main draw. The 57th-annual tournament includes seven players that will be competing in the Rio Olympics: Phil Dalhausser/Nick Lucena, Jake Gibb/Casey Patterson and Lauren Fendrick/Brooke Sweat of the U.S., and Olaya Pazo, a member of Venezuela's first ever beach team to qualify for the Olympics. Other teams of note in Friday’s action include top-seeded Lane Carico/Summer Ross and the brothers pair Taylor Crabb/Trevor Crabb. The eight women’s teams that advanced Thursday: Q1 Katie Jameson/Tracie Jones Q24 Michelle Iafigliola/Jennifer Solm Q12 Nicolette Martin/Allie Wheeler Q4 Lynne Galli/Briana Hinga Q3 Meg Dawson/Delaney Knudsen Q27 Jess Clausen/Xi Zhang Q7 Lara Dykstra Kelly Schumacher Q15 Nicole Bateham/Kimberly Smith The first-time qualifiers were Jennifer Solm, Xi Zhang (even though it’s really not that surprising that a 2008 bronze-medalist qualified), Nicole Bateham, and Kimberly Smith. Nicolette Martin/Allie Wheeler won the intra-USC battle, defeating teammates Teresa Cannon/Jo Kremer 17-21, 21-18, 15-13. “Me and my beach partner of three years, Allie Wheeler, had great chemistry today and we were able to pull through some tough matches, especially at the end of the day against our own USC teammates Terese Cannon and Josephine Kremer,” Martin said. “We couldn't be more excited to play in the AVP Manhattan Beach tomorrow against some pretty amazing teams!” Lynne Galli/Briana Hinga, who have missed the main draw the last three events, were happy to advance. “Bri and I have been looking forward to a deep sand event...

USA Men fall to Italy 25-22, 27-25, 26-28, 25-21 in World League final round - Articles

VolleyballMag.com offers you the FIVB version of the USA's four-set loss to Poland, which sets up a must-win match on Friday against Brazil. By FIVB.com Kraków, Poland, July 14, 2016 – Irritated after their straight sets defeat on the opening day to Brazil, Italy prevailed over USA in a twisting four-setter (25-22, 27-25, 26-28, 25-21) with Osmany Juantorena scoring a match-high 23 points. History repeated itself - since 2007 USA has not won their opening match in any Final Six tournament and this time it was no different. Matt Anderson did his best with 21 points but it was not enough as Juantorena's impressive performance overshadowed all other efforts to keep Italy's chance's of a spot in the semifinals on Saturday alive. This was the 25th World League meeting between these teams in the World League and Italy now leads the ledger having 13 of these encounters. The Americans opened the match with two technical errors and lacked concentration from the beginning as a feast of faults continued throughout the first part of the game. Aaron Russell twice hit outside the line while referee Heike Kraft whistled for a net touch as Italy led 8-3. United States woke up a moment later, blocking Fillippo Lanza twice, but they still trailed 16-9. Maxwell Holt did his job on the block, stopping Ivan Zaytsev but the Azzurri still had a four-point advantage at 20-16. Eight-time champions Italy, who were angry after yesterday’s loss against Brazil, did not lose control of the set and closed it out 25-22. It...

NVL Columbus Preview - Articles

The NVL is back in action Thursday in Columbus, Ohio, with a qualifier followed by the main draw Friday and the finish Saturday. Previewing the top four seeds on both sides: No. 1 Dave Palm/Eric Zaun settled for second in the NVL's last event in San Antonio (Zaun did not play the first event in Port St. Lucie). Palm/Zaun lost narrowly in the third set to Skylar DelSol/Piotr Marciniak 18-21, 21-8, 15-13. "Have been in this situation before,” Palm acknowledged, “but this time things will be different." Palm/Zaun are bombers. They jump serve tough and hit high and hard. That may give them an advantage in the night sessions, where it can be more difficult to pick up the ball defensively. Since there are probably eight teams that could win it all, it's tough to pick one out of the crowd, but this is the pair that is most likely to win. No. 2 Skylar DelSol/Piotr Marciniak. This team knows how to win, as evidenced by their Port St. Lucie and San Antonio championships. They're no strangers to champagne celebrations. They're one of the most difficult teams to side out against between Marciniak's technically sound blocking and DelSol's athletic speed on defense. They will certainly be in the mix, and can win if they make a play or two at crunch time. No. 3 Jeff Samuels/Travis Schoonover: This is one of the most exciting teams to watch on the tour. Jeff Samuels has an impressive vertical. Even 1984 silver medalist Rita Crockett (who had an impressive...

Olaya Pazo qualifies for the Olympics at the Continental Cup - Articles

In 2014, Venezuelan beach coach Mauro Hernandez saw a photo on the AVP Facebook page, captioned something along the lines of "Venezuelan Olaya Pazo hitting a ball.” Coach Hernandez messaged Pazo, inquiring whether Pazo had any interest in competing for Venezuela's beach team. More on that later. Fast forward two years, and Pazo has made Venezuelan volleyball history, qualifying Venezuela for its first beach volleyball Olympic berth with twin sister Rebeca Pazo. Venezuela qualified at the CSV Continental cup in Rosario, Argentina, one of the last opportunities to qualify. In the Continental cup, each country is represented by two doubles teams. The two pairs compete round-robin against five other countries in best-of-three rubber matches. Venezuela's two teams were twin sisters Olaya/Rebeca Pazo, and Norisbeth Agudo/Gabriela Brito. In the Venezuelan's final rubber, Olaya/Rebeca defeated Julieta Puntin/Irene Verasio of Argentina in the first match. They subsequently played Maria Julia Benet/Maria Zonta of Argentina in the second match, and were leading until an injury to Benet forced her to withdraw, guaranteeing Venezuela the Olympic berth. "It was really weird. I almost cried,” Olaya said. “It’s been a goal of mine so long, I almost don't believe it. I am still having a hard time believing it. Of course I'm super-excited, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it. It's definitely a dream come true." Since qualifying, the Venezuelan beach team has generated a ton of interest. “We got a lot of media attention, especially when we qualified. We're only the second team that has qualified, I think...
