Final week of Olympic Qualification: Hamburg Day 2 This weekend is the final opportunity for teams to either make the Olympic field or improve their position. Let’s take a quick look at the standings. Pool play in Hamburg is completed . Let’s start with the US women: No. 3 April Ross/Kerri Walsh Jennings finished second in their pool with a 2-1 record. They beat both No. 30 Teresa Mersmann / Isabel Schneider(Germany) 22-20, 21-11 and No. 14 Marta Menegatti / Viktoria Orsi Toth(Italy)13-21, 21-19, 15-12, but lost to No. 19 Maria Antonelli/Liliane Maestrini (Brazil) 21-12, 13-21, 20-18. No. 10 Lauren Fendrick/Brooke Sweat of the US finished 1-2 in pool, with a win over No. 26 Ekaterina Birlova / Evgeniya Ukolova(Russia) 24-22, 14-21, 20-18, and a loss to both No. 23 Mariafe Artacho / Nicole Laird(Australia) 21-19, 25-23 and No. 7 Karla Borger / Britta Buthe(Germany) 21-17, 21-14. Fendrick/Sweat finished fourth in their pool and will not advance, as their set record was 2-5 to Artacho/Laird’s 2-4 record. No. 25 Emily Day/Jennifer Kessy finished 0-3 in their pool and did not advance to the elimination rounds. Day/Kessy lost to No. 8 Madelein Meppelink / Marleen Van Iersel(Netherlands) 21-13, 21-17, No. 9 Louise Bawden/Taliqua Clancy (Australia) 18-21, 21-19, 15-12, and No. 24 Melissa Humana-Paredes / Taylor Pischke(Canada) 21-19, 21-14. The loss ends Day/Kessy’s Olympic aspirations for 2016; they will need to look to 2020.
