Songwriter Albert Hammond claimed, “It never rains in Southern California”. Mr. Hammond’s assertion was off the mark at AVP Huntington on Friday morning. - Articles

But the morning rains gave way to a largely sunny afternoon, although Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena forfeited their second-round match, citing shoulder concerns that were linked to a heavy ball. The top seeds sailed through largely unscathed. Of the top four seeds, Gibb/Patterson, the Crabb brothers, Walsh/Ross, DiCello/VanZwieten are comfortably in the winners' bracket. Other beneficiaries of upsets included No. 5 seed Bensend/Urango (No. 4 seed Dowdy/Stockman was upset by No. 13 McColloch/Reeves), No. 6 Carico/Ross (who defeated No. 3 Larsen/Metter/Flint), No. 8 Allen/Brunner (who sent No. 1 Doherty/Mayer to the contender’s bracket in a 21-19, 19-21, 17-15 match), and the No. 11 Bomgren brothers, who gained a walkover following Lucena’s shoulder injury. There were plenty of upsets in the contender’s bracket: No. 15 Brunsting/Frishman took out No. 10 Bates/Burik 17-21,21- 14,15-6, the No. 14 McKibbin brothers advanced over No. 6 Kolinske/Jennings 21-14,11-21,15- 12, No. 16 Evans/Toppel sent No. 9 Marchewka/McKienzie home by a score of 21-16, 21-11. Conditions look good for the remainder of the weekend, showing mostly clouding mornings clearing in the afternoon. Play begins at 9:30 am on Saturday, 9 am on Sunday.
