Being a five-sport athlete is almost impossible to fathom in today’s world, especially in a conference like the Pac-12. But the 6-foot-1 Liz Brenner did it. Five years at Oregon saw the product of Portland star in volleyball, where she was a key player in the Ducks’ run to the 2012 NCAA championship match. But she also played basketball and softball, threw the javelin in track and field, and finished her career last month in beach volleyball. Her favorite: “Indoor volleyball. Absolutely love it. No question. ” She played indoor volleyball for four years, track for four years, basketball for four years, beach volleyball for three years, and softball for one year. Officials at Oregon don’t know if Brenner has set a NCAA record for sports participation, but it certainly hasn’t ever been done at Oregon. “I don’t have an off season,” she said. ‘I’m just on to the next sport.” For example, Brenner wasn’t able to participate in an entire basketball season due to its overlap with indoor volleyball. Twice Brenner was an AVCA second-team indoor volleyball All-American, leading the Pac-12 in kills per set in 2013. In track, Brenner was a first-team All-American in javelin, with a personal best of 168 feet, 9 inches. She also competed in shot put, with a personal best of 45 feet, 11 inches. Brenner’s lettered three times in basketball at Oregon. In beach volleyball, Brenner was half of Oregon’s No. 1 doubles pairing.
