FSU-UCLA vie for spot against USC in NCAA Beach final - Articles

The Women of Troy took care of business again Saturday in the inaugural NCAA Beach Championship, defeating top-seeded Florida State to advance into Sunday championship match while putting forth the minimum effort. The match will be televised at 1 p.m. Central on TBS with Anne Marie Anderson on the play-by-play and former beach star Holly McPeak offering analysis. Top-ranked but second-seeded USC (33-2) on Friday defeated Stetson 3-0, while FSU (31-2) made short work of Georiga State, setting up a rematch of the top teams in the country. This past March 11 the Seminoles played very well and caught USC at the right time and came away with a 3-2 victory on USC’s home complex. But now Florida State has a tough task. Because of the 3-1 defeat, FSU will play UCLA at 10:30 a.m. Central Sunday with the winner getting USC in the title tilt. UCLA (22-7), which has kept grinding back from the losers’ bracket, ended Hawai’i’s season late Saturday afternoon in a matchup that saw the Bruins’ No. 4 team of Zana Muno and Jessyka Ngauamo win in two but all four others go to a third set. For that matter, the McNamara twins were losing 14-11 when UCLA clinched the match at No. 2, a victory by Ivey Schmitt and Kamilia Tan. USC won a school-record 29th consecutive dual match and cemented it on a win from its top pair, juniors Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes.
